SHSJ, USC North Lead the Way

Defending champion Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHSJ) and University of San Carlos North Campus (USC-NC) scored their second straight victories to lead the title favorites’ charge in the Passerelle division of the Milo-sponsored BEST SBP/Passerelle Twin Tournaments over the weekend.

SHSJ scored a routine 72-31 win over University of Southern Philippines (USPF) while USC North overcame a tough USC South squad, 54-46. Pre-tourney favorite University of Cebu (UC) also made its presence felt as it debuted with a 68-26 win over Don Bosco. In other Passerelle games, Don Bosco-B defeated USC North-B, 59-54. University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) bounced back from its opening day loss to SHSJ-A and defeated Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT), 57-42, as SHSJ-B nipped SCSIT, 69-68.

SHSJ now leads the Passerelle division’s Group A with a 2-0 slate while USC North also carries the same record in Group B. Other teams in Group A are Don Bosco-B (1-0), USJR (1-1), USC North-B (1-1), CIT (0-1) and USPF (0-2). Following USC North-A in Group B are UC (1-0), SHSJ-B (1-1), USC South (0-1), SCSIT (0-1) and Don Bosco-A (0-1).

In the Small Basketeers Philippines division (SBP), the Cebu Eastern College opened up its campaign with a confidence-building 23-20 win of SHSJ-B. Don Bosco also debuted, defeating USC North-b, 61-17. CEC (1-0) is bunched in Group A along with defending champions USC North (1-0), USC South (0-1) and SHSJ-B (0-1). Don Bosco (1-0), SHSJ-A (1-0), USC North-B (0-1) and USC South-B (0-1) compose Group B of the SBP division.

Milo BEST: All Basics The Basketball Efficiency Scientific Training (BEST) Center has been around for 31 years, and it has been at the forefront of doing the most basic of basketball teaching: sticking to the basics. This is the primary content of the Milo-sponsored BEST Center basketball clinics that have become an institution in Philippine basketball. “We teach the fundamentals, lahat ng klaseng fundamentals ng basketball — that’s our philosophy, dahil sabi nila, basketball is just a series of fundamentals,” said Nic, who was inspired to bring the concept of basketball clinics to the Philippines 31 years ago when budding players at that time had no formal training in the sport. SHS-Ateneo Wins Passerelle Championship

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu scored its second straight Passerelle Division championship as it overcame the University of the Visayas, 68-61, to rule the 34 th   SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club Gym. The Magis Eagles seized control of the game in the second period, built a commanding lead in the third before fighting off a UV rally in the end game to win the championship. The defending champions took a 17-11 lead after the first period as Joseph Dytian delivered eight points in the period. MVP Joash Cutamora and Rafael Arradaza then combined for 17 points in the second period to put up a 34-25 halftime lead. It was the third period set that broke the game open as they built a 52-32 lead behind three triples of Alden Cainglet and leadership of Jared Bahay. But UV countered to slice the lead to 56-43 by the end of the third period. With momentum on its side, UV put up a furious end-game rally, slicing the lead to six points
