Milo BEST Semis Cast Shapes Up

The semifinals cast of the Milo BEST SBP/Passerelle Twin Basketball Tournaments has cleared up with traditional age-group powers University of San Carlos (USC) North Campus, Sacred Heart School Jesuit and Don Bosco once again making its presence felt.

In the SBP division, defending champion USC North scored a sweep of its Group with a 66-12 win over SHSJ-B to take the top seed of Group A. Don Bosco then followed this with a 59-15 win over USC South-B to also sweep SBP’s Group B. SHSJ defeated USC North-B, 57-16 to take second place in Group B. USC North will face SHSJ in the cross-over semifinals while Don Bosco will play the winner of the virtual knock-out game between Cebu Eastern College (CEC) and USC South.

The Passerelle division was rocked by upsets over the weekend that made the race for the semis slots interesting. USC South leaned on Jose Pestano’s two free throws to record a 68-66 shocker over pre-tournament favorite University of Cebu (UC) in Group B play to keep its slim hopes for a stint in the semifinals alive. In Group A play, University of Southern Philippines (USPF) nipped University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR), 51-49, and spoil USJR’s chance of making it to the semis. SHSJ took solo leadership of Group A with an 80-45 win over second-running Don Bosco. In other Passerelle games, USC North-A crushed SCSIT, 78-30, while Don Bosco-A nipped SHSJ-B, 41-39. USC North-B defeated CIT, 57-49.

SHSJ now leads Passerelle division’s Group A with a 4-0 record followed by Don Bosco (3-1), USC North-B (3-1), USPF (1-3), USJR (1-3), and CIT (0-4). In Group B, USC North and USC South are tied at the top with 3-1 records followed by UC (2-1), SCSIT (1-2), Don Bosco-A (1-3) and SHSJ-B (1-3). USC South must win its last match and is hoping for a loss for either USC North or UC in their next games. Both teams will also be looking for a sweep of its final matches to assure a place in the semis. Should a three-way tie for the top three slots among USC North, UC and USC South occur at the end of the elimination round, the quotient system will be used to determine the top two teams. A winner-over-the other rule will be applied in a simple two-way tie.

The tournament moves to the CEC Gym on Friday when CEC hosts USC South in their knock-out game in the SBP division. The hosting of games by “home” teams is one of the recent innovations added to this year’s tournament to spice up the league. Don Bosco has also hosted some of its Passerelle matches while USC North hosted the opening ceremonies.
