All USC in Milo BEST SBP Finals

It will be an all USC affair for the championship of the Small Basketeers Philippines (SBP) SBP division of the Milo-backed BEST SBP/Passerelle Twin Tournaments 2009. Defending champions USC North exerted is mastery over Sacred Heart School-Jesuit through a 61-49 victory, while sister school USC South overcame a tough end-game rally to thwart Don Bosco, 52-44.

As expected, USC North, which is seeking a second straight championship, started out hot, controlling the first quarter, 28-18 behind the hot hands of Shann Tan. The Eagles came back in the second period to cut the lead down to 29-22, but USC North’s third quarter crew featuring Clint Suelto and Arnie Padilla padded the lead to 43-34 at the end of three periods. SHSJ launched another spirited rally in the fourth quarter with Popoy Navarro scoring six straight points to cut down the lead down to six at 51-45, three minutes left in the game. But then the duo of Tan and Anthony Pestaño literally took over the ballgame, scoring USC’s next 10 points to seal the win. Tan led USC with 16 points while Pestaño added 15. Navarro led SHSJ with 11.

In the other game, USC South also started out on fire, controlling the game from the onset. They took a 20-10 after the first period, then jacked this up to 30-11 after two behind the shooting of Carlo Ortega. But just when everyone thought that the game was in the bag, Don Bosco sent a strong reply in the third period even if it had to play with only four players. Big man Cris Dominic Yap rallied Don Bosco’s forces, cutting the lead down to 40-31 at the end of three quarters. Don Bosco sustained its rally in the fourth period, launching a 7-2 run to cut the lead to only four 42-38, 4:42 left in the game. After calling for time out, USC South went back to its full court press to stop the rally and that led to easy baskets for Christian Satorre and Rhoxel Tamarra who provided the insurance baskets. Ortega led USC South with 10 points while Yap led Don Bosco with 14.

The sister schools will face each other in a one-game sudden death championship game for the SBP title and a chance to represent Cebu at the Milo-BEST Regional Finals which will be held in Roxas City from October 24-25.
