SHS-Ateneo Cebu, Xavier Univ-CDO Win in All Ateneo Games

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan won the different titles at the All Ateneo Invitational Games 2020 held at the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu campus in Canduman, Mandaue.

SHS-Ateneo copped the Boys Under 13 Basketball event via a 64-50 win over Ateneo de Iloilo. SHS-Ateneo also won the Girls Under 13 Volleyball event by squeaking past Ateneo de Davao in five sets. Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan prevented a sweep by the hosts by bagging the Boys Under 12 Basketball with a thrilling come-from-behind 83-82 win over the host team.

In the Under 13 Boys Basketball finals, the Magis Eagles leaned in a second period to break open a close game and cruise to a win. After leading 14-10 after one period, the Magis Eagles opened up a 35-20 halftime lead, a gap they would maintain for the rest of the game. Dylan Jared Lim led a balanced attack and led three others in double digit scoring with 15 points and four steals. Alden Cainglet had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Froilan Maglasang and Damian Belano had 10 apiece. Zark Sapalaran led Ateneo de Iloilo with 12 as Jurrien Tenorio added 10. 
  
In the finals of Girls Under 12 Volleyball, the hosts squandered a 2-0 lead in sets and a 24-22 edge in the third set to fend off a gritty Ateneo de Davao side, 25-15, 25-14, 25-27, 18-25, 15-9. After losing the first two sets, the Davao girls woke up to take the next two sets, sending the match to a fifth set. The Lady Magis Eagles jumped to a 10-5 lead in the deciding set before ADDU sliced the lead to 10-7. The hosts replied with a 3-0 run for 13-7 lead before ADDU rallied yet again to 13-9. SHS-Ateneo then recovered to end the match.

Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan made sure that the hosts wouldn’t sweep all events as Vinn Anderson Racines scored on a baseline lay-up with four seconds left for the 82-81 victory. Down 80-81 with six seconds left, Xavier drew up a play for Raalm Jared Mangubat to play decoy and passer as he received the inbound pass at the elbow area, drew a double team and pass the ball to a moving Racines along the baseline. His lay-up lipped around the rim before dropping through the net. Xavier trailed the hosts, 47-63, at the end of the third period but never gave up, crawling their way back to the win. Agustin Pajo led Xavier University with 30 points and five steals while Mangubat added 19 points and a whopping 28 rebounds. Joseph Adrian Serra and Julius Jadz Villena had 12 points each. Xerex Alejandro led SHS-Ateneo with 28 points and eight rebounds. Maximillian Cole Ting added 12 as Kyean Gubat scored 11.

The Ateneo Invitational Games 2020-Cebu is a tournament for the under 12 and 13 age groups of the different Jesuit schools. The Cebu edition was the second after the initial staging in Davao last year. The event also focused on bonding and fellowship activities such as the Fellowship Night on Day 1 and a boodle fight and movie night on Day 2. Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan will host the 2021 edition of the games.

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu scored its second straight Passerelle Division championship as it overcame the University of the Visayas, 68-61, to rule the 34 th   SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club Gym. The Magis Eagles seized control of the game in the second period, built a commanding lead in the third before fighting off a UV rally in the end game to win the championship. The defending champions took a 17-11 lead after the first period as Joseph Dytian delivered eight points in the period. MVP Joash Cutamora and Rafael Arradaza then combined for 17 points in the second period to put up a 34-25 halftime lead. It was the third period set that broke the game open as they built a 52-32 lead behind three triples of Alden Cainglet and leadership of Jared Bahay.
