CYBL Playoff Picture Shapes Up

The final cast for the playoffs of the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) was set over the long weekend with the University of Cebu and Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHSJ) grabbing the top seed of their respective divisions.

In the Tropang Growee 13-Under division, the SHSJ Eagles grabbed the top seed via the tiebreaker as they were tied with University of San Carlos (USC) North and USC South for the top three spots with identical 3-1 slates. The Eagles lost to USC North 48-51 in overtime over the weekend, but bounced back to defeat Don Bosco-A, 39-35. USC South also defeated Don Bosco-A, 45-43 to create the three-way tie. Using the quotient system, SHSJ claimed the top spot with a 1.21 quotient, followed by USC North’s 1.02 and USC South’s 0.79.

Things were less complicated in the Tropang Growee 10-Under division as SHSJ streaked to a 4-0 record after defeating Royal Oaks International School (ROIS), 36-12. Don Bosco wound up second with a 3-1 record after they beat PAREF Springdale 27-13. SHSJ and Don Bosco will face in each other for the Tropang Growee 10-Under championship.

In the elite 16-Under Division A, UC cruised to its fifth straight win with a 69-36 trashing of USC South. USC North outlasted SHSJ, 64-54. The Baby Webmasters are going into the semifinals as solid favorites to make it all the way. Following them is a three-way tie for second through fourth places among USC North, USC South and SHSJ who all ended with 3-2 records. Using the quotient system to break the tie, USC North came out on top with a 1.03 quotient, followed by USC South’s 1.02 and SHSJ’s 0.96. UC will face the fourth-seeded SHSJ in the semifinals while the sister USC teams face off against each other. Don Bosco-A defeated USPF, 79-73 in a non-bearing game of previously winless teams.

In the Tropang Growee 13-Under Division B, USJR inched its war to the top ranking with a 31-25 win over Don Bosco-B. Don Bosco-B had earlier nipped USC North-B, 36-35. Southwestern University defeated USC North-B, 50-36.

In the other divisions, USJR sealed its place in the finals of the 16-Under Division B after nipping Don Bosco-B, 39-38. The Baby Jaguars also defeated PAREF Springdale, 81-42. Springdale bounced back from the loss to defeat SHSJ-B, 54-42. In other 16-Under Division B games, Don Bosco-B ousted SCSIT, 61-51 and Springdale 75-31. USJR will face idle CIT-Hoop It Up (4-0) in the finals.

The CYBL goes in to its last weekend of elimination round games with all teams already preparing for the semifinal round games. The Growee-backed CYBL 2009 is on its second season with 26 teams playing in three age groups.

SHS-Ateneo Wins Passerelle Championship

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu scored its second straight Passerelle Division championship as it overcame the University of the Visayas, 68-61, to rule the 34 th   SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club Gym. The Magis Eagles seized control of the game in the second period, built a commanding lead in the third before fighting off a UV rally in the end game to win the championship. The defending champions took a 17-11 lead after the first period as Joseph Dytian delivered eight points in the period. MVP Joash Cutamora and Rafael Arradaza then combined for 17 points in the second period to put up a 34-25 halftime lead. It was the third period set that broke the game open as they built a 52-32 lead behind three triples of Alden Cainglet and leadership of Jared Bahay.
