UC Marches On

The University of Cebu (UC) recorded two more lopsided wins over the weekend to go 4-0 in the 16-Under Division-A of the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL). UC cruised past USC North, 75-42, and Don Bosco-A, 73-43 to be just one game away from recording an elimination round sweep. In other 16-Under Division A games, Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHSJ) bounced back from its loss to UC by beating Don Bosco-A (DB), 72-43, and USC South, 59-54. University of San Carlos (USC) North also recorded its first win, a 59-47 beating of USPF. UC is now at 4-0, followed by SHSJ (2-1), USC South (2-1), USC North (1-2), USPF (0-3) and Don Bosco (0-2).

In the Tropang Growee 13-Under Division A, SHSJ scored two wins over the weekend to lead the pack. The Eagles defeated USC South, 54-33, then came back a day later to tame its Mandaue City rival Royal Oaks International School (ROIS), 47-32. USC South recovered from its loss to SHSJ by nipping USC North, 40-39, in overtime. USC North had earlier crushed Don Bosco, 57-36. SHSJ is now on top of the standings of the Tropang Growee 13-Under Division A with a 2-0 record followed by USC North (2-1), USC South (1-1), Don Bosco-A (0-1) and ROIS (0-2).

In the Tropang Growee 10-Under division, Don Bosco whipped ROIS 25-15, while PAREF Springdale recorded its first win over USC South, 19-9. Idle SHSJ is at the top of the standings with a 2-0 slate, followed closely by Don Bosco (2-1), Springdale (1-1), ROIS (1-1) and USC South (0-3).

In 16-Under Division B games, Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT)-Hoop It Up also cruised to its fourth straight win over the weekend. They crushed PAREF Springdale, 55-33 and Don Bosco-B, 66-47. University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) also recorded two wins, beating SCSIT, 57-40 and SHJS-B, 81-35. Don Bosco-B defeated SHSJ-B, 52-41. CIT-Hoop It Up is at first place at 4-0. USJR is at 2-1, SCSIT (1-1), DB-B (1-1), SHSJ-B (0-3). In 13-Under Division-B games, USJR/Ave Maria Sanctuary Park defeated USC North-B, 44-32, while Don Bosco-B nipped SWU, 34-33.

The CYBL 2009 is on its second season, showcasing 26 school-based teams playing in three age groups: 16, 13 and 10-Under. The league is organized in partnership with Tropang Growee.

Milo BEST: All Basics The Basketball Efficiency Scientific Training (BEST) Center has been around for 31 years, and it has been at the forefront of doing the most basic of basketball teaching: sticking to the basics. This is the primary content of the Milo-sponsored BEST Center basketball clinics that have become an institution in Philippine basketball. “We teach the fundamentals, lahat ng klaseng fundamentals ng basketball — that’s our philosophy, dahil sabi nila, basketball is just a series of fundamentals,” said Nic, who was inspired to bring the concept of basketball clinics to the Philippines 31 years ago when budding players at that time had no formal training in the sport. SHS-Ateneo Wins Passerelle Championship

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu scored its second straight Passerelle Division championship as it overcame the University of the Visayas, 68-61, to rule the 34 th   SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club Gym. The Magis Eagles seized control of the game in the second period, built a commanding lead in the third before fighting off a UV rally in the end game to win the championship. The defending champions took a 17-11 lead after the first period as Joseph Dytian delivered eight points in the period. MVP Joash Cutamora and Rafael Arradaza then combined for 17 points in the second period to put up a 34-25 halftime lead. It was the third period set that broke the game open as they built a 52-32 lead behind three triples of Alden Cainglet and leadership of Jared Bahay.
