Team Monterroyo, CEIV in Finals of Mondays Liga

Team Monterroyo and Cebu Engineering and Industrial Ventures (CEIV) squeezed themselves into the finals of the Mondays Liga 2008 with heart-stopping wins on the last day of the tournament’s double-round robin elimination phase. Team Monterroyo nipped LCP Garments, 58-56 in overtime, while CEIV bowed to Team-C 62-65, but made it to the finals via the quotient based tiebreaker.

In what turned out as a repeat of its first round game which was decided also in overtime, Team Monterroyo banked on its torrid three-point shooting and excellent field goal shooting to outlast an undermanned LCP squad. John Tantay stepped up in crunch time, scoring all his treys in the fourth quarter and overtime just as LCP seemed to grab the momentum. With LCP up by one 52-51, Tantay swished a trey to give Monterroyo a 54-52 lead with 26 seconds left in the game. Mario Camingao however replied with his medium range jumper with 12 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Tantay then drilled another trey to open up the overtime period while LCP’s offense fired blanks at the other end. Team Monterroyo drilled a total of 10 three point bombs led by Tantay’s three.

Team Monterroyo topped the elimination round with a 4-2 record and thus grabbed the first berth in the sudden-death championship game. Eric Mechado led Team Monterroyo with 21 points. Camingao led LCP with 21.

In the other game, Team C’s three-point 65-62 win was the biggest come-from-behind win the tournament, but it wasn’t enough to earn a berth in the championship. Both teams ended the elimination round with 3-3 records, but CEIV had won their first round encounter by six points, 59-53, thus winning the tiebreaker.

Team C clawed its way back after being down by as many as 14 points in the first half, finally grabbing the driver’s seat with less than two minutes left in the game at 64-62 as CEIV’s players gave in to fatigue. Team C was down by 13 at halftime 32-45, and by 10 at the end of the third period 42-52. They outscored CEIV 23-10 in the payoff period to seal the win.

Alain Lim led Team-C with 21 points. Roy Aznar paced CEIV with 19.
