CEIV Wins Mondays Liga

Cebu Engineering and Industrial Ventures (CEIV) blew hot and cold before toppling top seed Team Monterroyo, 52-47, to bag the championship of the Mondays Liga 2008.

CEIV leaned on the hot hands of Edmund Odulio in the first quarter to control the tempo of the game, taking an 18-7 lead going into the second period. CEIV maintained control of the game to take a 33-19 lead at halftime, this time with Roy Aznar leading the charges of City of Naga Councilor Venci del Mar.

Team Monterroyo, however, had other things in mind as they staged a rally, bouncing back in the third quarter with Bong Paculaba stepping up, slashing CEIV’s lead down to 39-31 after three periods. Team Monterroyo’s steady rally continued in the fourth quarter as they managed to control the tempo of the game and gained the much-needed momentum with Eric Nepomuceno at the helm. Team Monterroyo cut the lead down to only three at 47-50, with 22 seconds left in the game, but then went blank with their treys in an attempt to send the game into overtime. As Monterroyo went on a fouling spree, CEIV relied on the clutch free throws of Odulio to ice the game.

Odulio, who was later named MVP of the tournament, led all scorers with 15 points. He was backed up by Atan de Leon’s 11. Nepomuceno and Paculaba paced Team Monterroyo with 10 points apiece. They had sorely missed the services of Eric Mechado who showed up in street clothes due to an injury. Team Monterroyo finished the elimination round as the top seed with a 4-2 record, while CEIV was tied for second and third with Team C at 3-3. They grabbed the second seeding via the tiebreaker.

In the battle for third place, Team-C trashed LCP Garments, 91-68, behind the twin career-high performances of Alain Lim and Jonas Jumalon who had 43 and 40 points, respectively. Both were unstoppable as they mocked all defenders thrown at them. Lander Perez led LCP’s cause with 20 points.

The Mondays Liga is the annual tournament of Club Monday, a basketball club that was founded in 1995.

Milo BEST: All Basics The Basketball Efficiency Scientific Training (BEST) Center has been around for 31 years, and it has been at the forefront of doing the most basic of basketball teaching: sticking to the basics. SHS-Ateneo Wins Passerelle Championship

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu scored its second straight Passerelle Division championship as it overcame the University of the Visayas, 68-61, to rule the 34 th   SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club Gym. The Magis Eagles seized control of the game in the second period, built a commanding lead in the third before fighting off a UV rally in the end game to win the championship. The defending champions took a 17-11 lead after the first period as Joseph Dytian delivered eight points in the period. MVP Joash Cutamora and Rafael Arradaza then combined for 17 points in the second period to put up a 34-25 halftime lead. It was the third period set that broke the game open as they built a 52-32 lead behind three triples of Alden Cainglet and leadership of Jared Bahay.
