Liquid Tile/UAP Lapulapu, Polyflor Win in Davies Cup Opener

Liquid Tile/UAP Lapulapu trounced Megacryl/PICE-A, 68-54, to serve notice of its billing as pre-tournament favorites on opening weekend of the Davies Cup 2008 basketball tournament at the Metro Sports Center.

With both sides dealing with inconsistent play due to opening day jitters, Liquid Tile managed to play just a tad better in the first quarter, taking a 17-8 lead. The second quarter though, was an all Liquid Tile show as Jonathan Suico scored nine of his 11 points to up Liquid Tile’s lead to 13 points, 37-24 at halftime. It was smooth-sailing from there on as Megacryl couldn’t find the answers to Liquid Tile’s inside game and its deep bench with Coach Mark Tallo using evey player on the roster.

John Sulay scattered 13 points to lead the charges of Liquid Tile team manager Alan Coachuy. He was backed up by Suico and Jay Ramodes who had 11 points apiece. Raymond Mateo, Jeamar Sanchez and Marlon Oporto each had 11 points for Megacryl.

Arch't Benjamin AliƱo of UAP and Richard Lazanas of Davies Paints make the official ceremonial toss to kick off the Davies Cup 2008 basketball tournament.

In the other game, Polyflor scored a 75-68 win over Sun & Rain/UAP Rajah Humabon, denying what could’ve been a double win for architects on opening day. Polyflor made up for its lack in size by going to its edge in speed in the second period to score the win. Up by only three 25-22 at the end of the first quarter, Polyflor ran up the score with transition basketball to take a 47-32 lead at the half. This was all they needed as they coasted and protected the lead all the way til the end.

Roy Rosos led Polyflor with 18 while Mark Modejar chipped in 17. Sun & Rain was led by Vincent Sesbreno 17 and Rhyan Pepito’s 15 points.

The Davies Cup 2008 is a basketball tournament gathering professionals in the construction industry to play in a friendly atmosphere of competition. Among those playing are three teams from the architects group, two from the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), and five teams from various paint contractors.
