Four Teams Go 2-0 in Davies Cup
Power Floor/UAP Cebu-Sugbu, Liquid Tile/UAP Lapulapu, Polyflor and Roof Shield registered their second straight wins over the weekend at the Metro Sports Center to pace their respective groups of the Davies Cup 2008 basketball tournament.
In Group A action, Liquid Tile/UAP Lapulapu overcame an upset-conscious Sun and Rain/UAP Rajah Humabon, 80-74. Meanwhile Polyflor kept abreast with Liquid tile by beating the debuting Mortaflex squad, 79-61.
Liquid Tile blew hot and cold throughout the game, trailing in the first period before rallying and grabbing control of the game in the third period. Coming off a 54-52 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, Liquid Tile raced to as much as a 10-point lead before Sun and Rain staged a rally that cut the lead down to two points on two occasions, the last at 71-73, thanks to a five-point swing of team captain Rolan Alberto. Roy Ramodez, however took over for Liquid Tile in the end-game, banging in seven of his 18 points in the final two minutes to seal the win. Mark Capili led the architects from the UAP Lapulapu Chapter with 20 points. Ramodez added 18. Vincent Sesbreño led Sun and Rain with 26 points, but couldn’t get enough support from his teammates.
In the other Group A game, Polyflor relied on the double-digit scoring of five players to outlast Mortaflex. Polyflor used a big fourth quarter run to break open a close game, limiting Mortaflex to only nine points in the payoff period. Jim Querubin led four other players in double digits with 18 points. Mark Modejar added 17. Bangayan led Mortaflex with 19 points.
In Group B play, Power Floor/UAP Cebu-Sugbu crushed Classitex, 79-60. Criz Matunog led Power Floor with 25 points while Antonio Decatoria bulldozed his way to 19 points. Al Sanchez single-handedly carried Calssitex’s attack with 24 points. Roof Shield trashed Acreex, 87-70 behind the 29 points of Efren Bauga. Tana led Acreex with 26.
Liquid Tile/UAP Lapulapu and Polyflor pace Group A also with 2-0 records. Mortaflex is at 0-1, followed by Sun and Rain/UAP Rajah Humabon at 0-2. The two teams at the end of the single-round robin elimination round will move on to the cross-over semifinals.
Power Floor/UAP Cebu-Sugbu and Roof Shield now lead Group B with 2-0 win-loss records. Acreex is third at 0-1 while Classitex has fallen to 0-2.
