All roads lead to the Metrosports basketball gym at 3 pm this Saturday for the kick-off salvo of the 1st Davies Cup basketball tournament. A joint project of Davies Paints and the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), the first professional hoop invitational in Cebu features licensed architects against civil engineers and contractors in a friendly but highly competitive hardcourt war.

A total of 10 teams divided into two brackets will see action in the two-month tilt aimed at fostering fellowship and camaraderie among those in the industry: architects, civil engineers, and contractors.

Making up Group A are Liquid Tile-UAP Lapu-Lapu Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) Team A of Jeamar Sanchez, Sun and Rain-UAP Rajah Humabon Contractors A of Teddy Perges (Jet Engineering) and Contractors C. Group B, on the other hand, is composed of Power Floor-UAP Cebu & Sugbu, PICE Team B of Tony Cabardo, Contractors B of Noel Pendejito (JL Painters), Contractors D of Jonas Gesulga (Basak Skippers), and Contractors E of Robert Gersamio.

“This is just the start of Davies Cup. Hopefuly, we will hold this tournament on a yearly basis,” said Davies Paints business development officer Richard T. Lazanas in a press conference yesterday at Bigby’s Restaurant at the North Wing of SM City-Cebu.

Also present were Lazanas’ fellow Davies business development officer Jay Kelly L. Manatad, tournament organizer Rico S. Navarro, UAP’s Alan G. Choachuy, Mark Capili, and Paolo Alberto, commissioner Danny Duran, technical committee chief Edwin Dejacto, and representatives of the different participating teams.
Navarro said the competition follows a single round robin format, with the top two teams at the end of the classification round advancing into the crossover semifinals. The winners will then clash for the championship in a winner-take-all affair.

In the case of any forms of tie (two-way or multiple tie), the winner-over-the-other rule will apply. The teams will be re-classified based on their win-loss records against each other. If no team defeated all the other teams (in multiple tie), the Olympic quotient system will be applied.

Navarro said the scores of the games of the teams involved in the tie will be used as basis for the quotient, meaning the total points scored over the total points against the team.

The games will be played only on Saturdays and Sundays from March 8 to April 20. – EBV
