La Salle Greenhills, NU Favored to Win SBP Passerelle National Titles
Roxas City - Can the La Salle Greenhills SBP basketball team
score a 5-Peat national championship? Will National University’s Passerelle
basketball team win a second straight national championship? Both questions
will be answered as the national finals of the 34th SBP SBP
Passerelle Twin Tournament sponsored by Milo kicks off on Saturday, November
23, at the Dinggoy Roxas Civic Center in Roxas City.
La Salle Greenhills, national champions of the SBP division
since 2015, is seeking its fifth straight championship. It will face challenge
from Visayas champion University of the Visayas of Cebu, Mindanao champion
Corpus Christi School of Cagayan de Oro and Luzon champion Berkeley School of
Baguio.
Meanwhile, National University seeks to create its own
dynasty in the Passerelle division as it takes its highly-touted line-up to the
weekend tournament also backed by Chris Sports, SKLZ and Rain or Shine. Out to
challenge the Bullpups are Mindanao champion Xavier University High School of
Cagayan de Oro, International School for Better Beginnings of Lucena and
Visayas champion and local team HERCOR College of Roxas City.
The weekend tournament sees the four teams of each division
playing in a single round-robin classification phase, with the top two clashing
for the national championship. The other two teams play for third place.
The SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament is the premier tournament
for the age group/grassroots level. The SBP is for the Under 12, 11 and 10 age
groups, while the Passerelle division is for the Under 15, 14 and 13 age
groups. Games of this nationwide tournament started in August at the local
level in Baguio, Pangasinan, Pampanga and Lucena for Luzon; Iloilo, Roxas,
Bacolod and Cebu for the Visayas; Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga for
Mindanao. Metro Manila served as one region. Regional championships were then
held in October and November, leading to this weekend’s national finals. The
tournament is also supported by Chris Sports, Rain or Shine and Sklz.
