SHS-Ateneo Wins Passerelle Championship

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu scored its second straight Passerelle Division championship as it overcame the University of the Visayas, 68-61, to rule the 34th SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club Gym.

The Magis Eagles seized control of the game in the second period, built a commanding lead in the third before fighting off a UV rally in the end game to win the championship. The defending champions took a 17-11 lead after the first period as Joseph Dytian delivered eight points in the period. MVP Joash Cutamora and Rafael Arradaza then combined for 17 points in the second period to put up a 34-25 halftime lead. It was the third period set that broke the game open as they built a 52-32 lead behind three triples of Alden Cainglet and leadership of Jared Bahay. But UV countered to slice the lead to 56-43 by the end of the third period. With momentum on its side, UV put up a furious end-game rally, slicing the lead to six points at 63-57 with 3:15 left in the game behind Franc Gabunada’s two treys and Denisvee Ryan Sinoy. But Bahay drilled a clutch triple for a 66-57 lead, 2:55 remaining, and after UV missed two free throws, Cutamora scored the insurance basket for a 68-57 lead, 1:45 left. UV went scoreless until scoring two more field goals in the dying seconds of the game. Cainglet and Cutamora led SHS-Ateneo with 12 points apiece as Arradaza added ten. Gabunada led UV with12 points. Benedict Paca had 10.

The Magis Eagles scored the first back-2-back feat since 2011 when it won five straight titles. The championships between 2011 and 2018 had been won by either UV, USC or SHS-Ateneo. They will represent Cebu at the Visayas Regional Finals which will be held in Pototan, Iloilo November 9-10. In the game for third place, SWU-PHINMA got back at its elimination round tormentor USC, 52-42. USC won the Sportsmanship Award while Joash Cutamora was named MVP of the tournament.
