SHS-Ateneo vs. UV in Passerelle Finals

Defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and the University of the Visayas set another showdown for the championship of the Passerelle division of the 34th BEST Center SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo after winning their semifinal round assignments yesterday at the Sacred Heart School Mango avenue campus yesterday. SHS-Ateneo cruised past Southwestern University-PHINMA, 56-26, while UV overcame University of San Carlos, 41-32.

The top-seeded Magis Eagles banked on a strong second period to break open a close game and oust the fourth seeded Baby Cobras. After the game was tied at 12-all at the end of the first period, the defending champs opened up a 29-17 lead at halftime behind the offense of Michael Asoro and Joash Cutamora. The lead ballooned to 44-21 after three periods with Froilan Maglasang drilling two triples as part of his eight points in the period. It was cruise control all the way to the win. Asoro and Cutamora had ten points each to lead SHS-Ateneo while MJ Tigmo and Maxelle Cole had five points each to lead SWU-PHINMA.

Meanwhile, UV was surpised with resistance from a hard-fighting USC side that took the upper hand after the first period, 11-9. UV seized the momentum and control of the game in the second and third periods with comfortable leads of 20-14 and 34-23. Kenneth Cole waxed hot in the second period while Enricke Herbito took charge in the third period, both with two triples each. But that wasn't the last they heard from USC. The Baby Warriors clawed their way back into the game in the fourth period with Agamemnon Allosada and Justine Betinol combining to cut the lead to 36-32, 1:58 left in the game. But that was USC’s last stand as Lawrence Petchan canned two free throws to create breathing room for UV at 38-32, 1:20 left. USC couldn’t find the basket after that. Herbito and Cole led UV wih six points each while Justine Betinol led USC with 11 points and Agamemnon Allosada added eight.

SHS-Ateneo and UV will clash for the Passerelle division championship on Sunday, September 15, at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club. USC and SWU-PHINMA play for third place in the opener. The awarding ceremony for both the SBP and Passerelle divisions will take place right after the Passerelle division championship game.
