SHSJ, USC South in Visayas Finals

Roxas City - Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHSJ) and University of San Carlos South Campus (USC) barged into the championship of the Visayas Regional Finals of the Milo-sponsored BEST SBP/Passerelle Twin Tournament after scoring two convincing wins each in the elimination round.

The Eagles, Visayas defending champions in the Passerelle division, thumped St. John’s Institute (SJI) of Bacolod 73-59 in its first game. SHSJ led from start to finish, controlling all departments of the ballgame in erecting a 41-22 halftime lead enroute to the big win that kicked off the winning run of the two Cebu teams that are playing here in Roxas.

USC South then trooped to the court and duplicated the win of its elder counterparts as they crushed St. John’s Institute of Bacolod, 51-38, in a Small Basketeers Philippines (SBP) game. USC South broke open a close game after taking a 20-14 halftime lead, streaking to a 37-25 lead at the end of three quarters. It was cruise control from then on for that crucial first win.

SHSJ scored its second straight win in the Passerelle division through a huge 73-43 rout over College of St. John Roxas (CSJR). The win, coupled with the 2-0 start of Iloilo Central Commercial School (ICCHS) sent both squads to the championship game. USC South also went 2-0 after trashing Filamer Christian College of Roxas, 65-23, in the SBP division. The second win meant an automatic ticket to the championship game against Ateneo de Iloilo which also won its first two games.

The championship of both the Passerelle and SBP divisions is a showdown between champions of Cebu and Iloilo, with Cebu going all out to send both SHSJ and USC South to the national finals next month. Momentum is on the side of the Cebu teams after scoring two convincing wins, but they can’t take their foes lightly. Both teams are supported by a lean but mean crowd of parents and relatives who also trooped to Roxas. The four teams in the Passerelle division are SHSJ, ICCHS, SJI and CSJR. The four teams in the SBP division are USC South, SJI-Bacolod, Ateneo de Iloilo and Filamer Christian College.
