SHSJ, USC in Milo BEST Passerelle Finals

For the second year in a row, the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHSJ) and the University of San Carlos (USC) North Campus will clash for the championship of the Passerelle division of the Milo-sponsored BEST SBP/Passerelle Twin Tournaments for Cebu. Back-to-back Cebu champion SHSJ survived some scary moments before outscoring the University of Cebu (UC), 92-78, while USC North overcame the hot three-point shooting of Don Bosco to score an 80-73 win at the cross-over semifinals held at the USPF Gym.

After seizing control of the first quarter at 17-13, SHSJ crumbled to the pressure of playing against the four-man second period UC squad led by Jerie Pingoy. Pingoy combined forces with Jerick Yburan to give UC a 39-32 lead at halftime. But all of Pingoy and Yburan’s efforts went down the drain in the third quarter as SHSJ seized control of the game, overtaking UC at 42-41 with 7:10 left in the third period. The lead ballooned to 18 points, 65-47, after three quarters with Adrian Muller, Bradley Bacaltos and Jessienete Wahing combining for 28 points in the third quarter run. Wahing also played a key defensive role in shutting down John Aranas in the same period.

UC then woke up in the fourth quarter to stage a daring rally featuring Pingoy and Alvin Labolabo. The Baby Webmasters slowly chipped away at the SHSJ lead, cutting it down to three points at 74-71 with 4:40 left in the game. SHSJ stretched the lead to 78-71 before Yburan buried a triple to close the gap to 78-74. A hard foul followed by a technical foul on Adamme Talisic momentarily cut UC’s momentum, with Kris Porter and Rebreb Diputado making three of four free throws to give SHSJ an 81-74 lead. Pingoy replied with a triple then Labolabo added a free throw to cut the lead to 81-78, 1:59 left. After suing for time, SHSJ found an unlikely hero in Patrick Go who hit a clutch triple from the corner to give SHSJ an 84-78 lead with 1:50 left. Go’s heartbreaker which hit nothing but net, completely silenced UC which couldn’t score a single basket after that. Muller led a balanced SHSJ attack with 16 points. Porter added 14, while Diputado and Bradley Bacaltos had 13 and 10 points, respectively. Pingoy led the UC attack with 23 points. Yburan added 11 while Aranas had 10.

In the other game, USC North doused off a stubborn Don Bosco squad that relied on the three-point basket to prevent USC from scoring a run-away win. Although taking comfortable leads of 44-32 at halftime and 63-51 after three quarters, the Baby Warriors couldn’t dispose of Don Bosco as the Greywolves drilled in timely triples just when USC would threaten to pull away. Marlo Pono and Dale Belangel had a triple apiece in Don Bosco’s fourth quarter rally that slashed the lead to five, 78-73 with 58 seconds left in the game. But Don Bosco didn’t have a reply for the power playing Lorenzo Bacaltos who was good for eight of USC North’s 17 points in the fourth period. After Rey Arnejo missed two free throws, Bacaltos scored on a putback to seal the win. Bacaltos led all scorers with 15 points. He was backstopped by Arsenio Uy’s 10. Pono led Don Bosco with 15 points while Dale Belangel chipped in 10.
