USC, Don Bosco Seal Title Clash in CYBL
The University of San Carlos (USC) North Campus and Don Bosco scored convincing wins to arrange a showdown for the championship of the Tropang Growee 13-Under Division A of the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL). USC North upstaged sister team USC South, 44-27, while Don Bosco downed an undermanned Sacred Heart School Jesuit (SHSJ), 52-26.
USC North, which lost in overtime to USC South in the elimination round, made sure that the game wouldn’t be another OT thriller as they broke open a close game courtesy of a big third quarter run. Up by only three at the half, 13-10, the Baby Warriors limited USC South to only five points in the third quarter to take a 31-15 lead after three periods. They then thwarted all USC South attempts to stage a rally. In the other game, Don Bosco exploited the depleted SHSJ line-up that had four players in sickbay and three others still recovering from the flu by starting out hot, taking an 18-6 lead after one quarter and streaking to a 26-8 halftime lead. It was cruise control from then on. The USC NC-Don Bosco clash will be a rematch of the Milo BEST SBP Tournament championship won by USC last year.
In other games, PAREF Springdale recorded its best ever finish in a basketball tournament, finishing third in the Tropang Growee 10-Under division after nipping Royal Oaks International School, 13-12. Down 4-12 after three quarters, Springdale shut down the Royal Oaks offense with their full-court pressure and scored nine points in the fourth quarter to score the come-from-behind win.
In the Tropang Growee 13-Under Division B, USJR/Ave Maria Sanctuary and Don Bosco-B likewise arranged a championship clash for themselves. USJR trounced USC North-B, 53-24, while Don Bosco-B nipped Southwestern University (SWU) in overtime, 44-37. SWU came back a day later to defeat USC North-B, 46-22, to claim third place in the division. In the 16-Under Division B, Salazar College of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) claimed third place after outplaying Don Bosco-B, 73-60.
The championship games of the Tropang Growee 10-Under, 13-Under Division A and 16-Under Division A of the CYBL will be held on Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum, serving as preliminary games of the ongoing CESAFI Partners Cup playoffs. SHSJ faces Don Bosco in the 10-Under division, while the finalists of the 16-Under division will be determined later this week.
