UC, USC NC, SHSJ Top CYBL
In a message to send that youth basketball is very much alive and balanced among the different school-based ballclubs, five different teams ruled the five divisions at the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) 2009 season that ended over the weekend.
In the elite 16 Under Division-A, the University of Cebu (UC) avoided a repeat of the same finals story from last year as they overcame an end-game rally to defeat defending champs University of San Carlos (USC) South Campus, 69-60. UC was in the driver’s seat through most of the game, until complacency turned into an opportunity for USC South to stage a fourth quarter rally that got them to as close as three, 53-56 with five minutes left in the game. USC South was looking to repeat their comeback story of 2008 where they came from behind to defeat UC in overtime. But the Baby Webmasters recovered just in time behind Alexander Nazareno who scored all seven of his points in the fourth period after team leader Gerald Ampo-on fouled out with 3:55 left. Ampo-on led UC with 15 points. He was backed by James Sumayang’s 12. Arsenio Uy III and Joseph Juariza had 11 and 10 points, respectively to lead USC South.
It was a similar story in the Tropang Growee 13 Under Division-A Finals as USC North defeated Don Bosco, 49-34 to record back-to-back CYBL titles. Down 13-18 at halftime after Don Bosco seemed to have the upper hand in controlling the game, USC North went to their dreaded full-court press and the scoring of Michael Balankig to seize control of the game in the third period. USC North went on a 20-4 run to start the quarter and never looked back. Balankig, a role player known more for his defense and rebounding, had a breakout game, scoring 14 points to lead USC.
USC North recorded back-to-back CYBL championships in the Tropang Growee 13 Under Division-A.
It was Sacred Heart School-Jesuit’s (SHSJ) turn to shine in the youngest age group, the Tropang Growee 10 Under division where they outscored Don Bosco, 26-20 to become CYBL’s first-ever 10 Under champions. After a close first half with SHSJ on top 8-6, the Eagles went to team captain Jed Colonia who delivered nine of his game-high 13 points in the second half to break the game wide open. SHSJ stretched the lead to 15-10 after three periods then pulled away in the fourth to seal the win. Benedict Andre Chua added six points to support Colonia. Lawrence Hapin led Don Bosco with 12 points while crowd favorite Lance Lemuel Jumao-as had 6.
SHSJ topped the youngest age group, the Tropang Growee 10 Under division.
The University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR)/Ave Maria Sanctuary Park made a big statement in its rookie performance in the CYBL, winning the Tropang Growee 13 Under Division-B championship, toppling Don Bosco-B, 40-31. USJR started out hot, taking a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and thwarted all Don Bosco rallies, switching to cruise control for the rest of the game to bag the championship. Rendel Thomas Senining led USJR with 13 points. Ashton Samson led Don Bosco with 11.
In the 16 Under Division-B, Cebu Institute of Technology/Hoop It Up overcame a tough University of San Jose Recoletos squad, 48-43, to win the championship. The game was nip and tuck all throughout the match with CIT/Hoop It Up always on top but never able to seize a big lead. In the end, it was a case of breaks and the steadier shooting of CIT’s veterans that iced the win. Clyvin Limalima led CIT/Hoop It Up with 12 points, while Jude Go and Stephen Eborlas had eight apiece for USJR.
The CYBL 2009 tournament is the second season of the league that was established to support the development of youth basketball. This year’s run was organized in partnership with Growee. Plans are now underway to stage a summer league in May.
