LCP, Monterroyo Win in Mondays Liga

LCP Garments defeated Cebu Engineering and Industrial Ventures (CEIV) in a battle of opening day winners, 67-57, to take solo leadership of the Mondays Liga 2008. In the other game Team Monterroyo bounced back from last week’s loss to outlast Team-C, 47-42.

The LCP squad of team owner Lander Perez once again relied on a big second quarter to break open a close game and cruise to its second win in as many games. Mario “The Silencer” Camingao stepped up again as he did last week, drilling in 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second period alone, leading LCP to take a comfortable 42-24 lead at the halftime break. CEIV staged a third quarter rally behind Atan de Leon’s 10 points while limiting LCP to only eight points, their lowest output in a quarter, to close the gap to 50-36. But Perez took over in the final period to douse any chances of a CEIV comeback.

Camingao led LCP with 22 points while Perez and Big Mac Macmac had 18 and 15 points, respectively. Edmund Odulio led CEIV with 13 as de Leon chipped in 12.

In the battle of opening day losers, Team Monterroyo leaned on the hot hands of Eric Manzano and three-point shooting of John Tantay to carve out a close win. The game was close all throughout the game with the Monterroyo squad enjoying a mere four-point halftime lead, 21-17.

Manzano and Tantay then connived to score all of Monterroyo’s third quarter points to keep their opponents at bay going into fourth quarter where both sides settled for simply trading baskets.

Manzano led Team Monterroyo with 16 points while Tantay added 9, all on triples. Alain Lim led Team-C with 11.

Team standings have LCP on top with 2-0 record, followed by CEIV (1-1), Team Monterroyo (1-1) and Team-C (0-2). The Mondays Liga is the annual basketball tournament of Club Monday, a basketball club that started among common friends in 1995.
