CEIV, Team Monterroyo Score OT Wins in Mondays Liga
It was a night of overtime wins as Cebu Engineering and Industrial Ventures (CEIV) and Team Monterroyo both scored cliffhanger wins that needed extended periods in the Mondays Liga. CEIV outlasted Team C, 59-53, while Team Monterroyo nipped LCP Garments, 62-61.
While CEIV celebrated the comeback of balikbayan Jojo Nardo to the tournament after a year-long absence, the team composed of ex-Gamma players of USC leaned on the end-game heroics of Buchoy Jacobe who sent the game into overtime and scored five of his team’s nine overtime points to score their second win in three games. Jacobe scored the team’s last three points in regular time, including a free throw that sent the game into extended play. He also scored CEIV’s first five points in overtime to douse any hopes of a rally from the opposition.
Edmund Odulio scattered 26 points to lead CEIV. Jacobe added 10, eight of these coming in the fourth period and overtime. Val Duarte led Team C with 14 while Drexell Mingo added 11.
In the other game, Eric Machado completed a three-point play with five seconds remaining in overtime to lead Team Monterroyo over the league leading LCP Garments squad. With LCP on top 60-59 and 23 seconds left in overtime, Macmac Camerino split his charities to give LCP a 61-59 lead. Team Monterroyo then decided to go for the last shot, setting up an isolation play for Machado who drove by his defender to make a difficult lay-up to tie the game, and drawing a foul from LCP’s weakside help defender. Machado calmly sank the bonus free throw to seal the win. LCP had earlier rallied in the fourth period, with Lander Perez scoring a triple to send the game into overtime at 57-all with 26 seconds left in the regulation.
John Tantay led Team Monterroyo with 22 points, including six triples. Mario Camingao led LCP with 20 points while Camerino added 18.
Team standings now see three teams in a tie for first place with 2-1 records: LCP, CEIV and Team Monterroyo. Team-C is at 0-3. The Mondays Liga is the annual basketball tournament of Club Monday, a basketball club that started among common friends in 1995.
