SHS-Ateneo, USC 3-0 in Passerelle Play
Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and the University of San
Carlos recorded their third straight wins without a loss yesterday to share the
top spot of the Passerelle division of the BEST SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament
backed by Milo. SHS-Ateneo overcame the University of the Visayas, 39-34, while
USC scored its second straight overtime win, 44-40 over Don Bosco Technical
College Cebu.
In a game of tournament heavyweights, SHS-Ateneo trailed UV
in the first half, recovered in the third, lost the lead in the fourth period
before going on an end-game run to score the close win. They were down 7-10 and
15-23 at halftime before taking over the third period for a 29-26 lead going
into the fourth period. UV however stormed back to tie the game at 31-all, then
regain the lead at 34-31 on a big triple by Denisvee Sinoy. But that was all
for UV as Joash Cutamora and Jared Bahay made a free throw each to give the
Magis Eagles back the lead at 35-34. Bahay then drilled a clutch corner triple
with 30 seconds left in the game to create breathing room for their side at
38-34. Bahay led the defending champions with 13 while Cutamora added nine. Lawrence
Petchan led UV with 10 as Sinoy shared nine.
Winning games in overtime seems to be a habit for USC. After
winning over SWU-PHINMA in overtime last Wednesday, the Baby Warriors lost a
lead that they had built before waking up just in time to score the win.
Leading comfortably at halftime, 21-13 and 30-23 after the third period, USC
suddenly went quiet in the fourth period, allowing Don Bosco to mount a
comeback and tie the game at 36-all on a big triple from Kelaiah Tapic, to send
the game into overtime. In a reversal of fortunes, Don Bosco went scoreless in
overtime as USC scored six unanswered points for a commanding 42-36 lead. Archimedez
Allosada led USC with eight while Justine Ian Betinol added seven. SHS-Ateneo
and USC now share the leadership in the team standings with identical 3-0
slates, followed by UV (2-1), DBTC (1-2), SWU-PHINMA (0-3) and SMS-Boystown
(0-3).
