SHS-Ateneo Win CYBL Titles

In a rare display
of a balance of powers, the University of the Visayas, University of Southern
Philippines Foundation and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu snared the
championships of the premier age groups of Division 1 of the Cebu Youth
Basketball League 2018-2019 3rd Conference yesterday at the
SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Mango Avenue campus gym. UV started the ball rolling by
thumping SHS-Ateneo de Cebu, 57-25 for the Under 12 age group title. USPF won
its first ever CYBL title, surprising UV, 57-55. And SHS-Ateneo de Cebu nearly
collapsed before closing out Sisters of Mary School-Boystown, 52-41, for the
Under 18 age group championship.
In the Under 12
finals, it was an all-UV show from start to finish as the Baby Lancers jumped
to a 35-13 halftime lead after taking a 16-10 lead at the end of the first
period. It was cruise control from then on as they swept all six major
tournaments played this school-year. They won the championships of the CYBL
Summer League, the Cebu and Visayas legs of the SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament,
CESAFI, CVIRAA and have now defended their CYBL 3rd Conference title.
They also placed second to La Salle Greenhills in the national finals of the
SBP Passerelle Tournament. Jan Mark Toring led UV with 17 as Neil Dave Sinoy
added nine. Froiland Maglasang led SHS-Ateneo with seven.
The Under 15 age
group produced a champion outside of UV and SHS-Ateneo de Cebu for the first
time in a long time with USPF banking on the end-game clutch shooting of Eldie
Sevillejo and Jerwin Espina to bag their first every CYBL championship. It was
a close game from the start with neither side taking control of the game. UV
took the leads in the first two period, 17-15 and 28-25. But USPF stormed back
to take the driver’s seat, 41-37, at the end of the third period. UV regained
the lead at 44-43 as the fourth period became a dogfight for which team wanted
it more. USPF tied the game at 44-all, enjoyed a slight lead before UV tied the
game at 51-all. The game was tied at 52-all in an exchange of free throws with
1:05 left. Sevillejo than made two free throws with 30 seconds remaining before
Espina scored on a lay-up for a 56-52 lead with seven seconds left. But it
wasn’t over as Christian Jay Alilin drilled a triple to slice the lead to 56-55
with two ticks remaining. Sevillejo split his charities for the final score.
Kline Ochavo led USPF with 13 points while Sevillejo added 11. Espina had eight.
Alilin led UV with 13, including three triples in the thrilling fourth period.
The Under 18
championship game proved that one can’t be complacent against a hungry team.
Going into the game as favorites, SHS-Ateneo played as advertised by taking the
first two periods, 14-5 and 19-14. But the SMS-Boystown side had a surprise of
their own as they battled back to take a 31-30 lead at the end of the third
period, stunning the favored Magis Eagles. With momentum on their side, the
Aloysians opened up a 35-30 lead, prompting SHS-Ateneo head coach Rommel Rasmo to
call a much-needed time-out to regroup. True enough, the Magis Eagles turned
things around quickly, going on a 12-4 run to take a 42-39, with a triple each
from Tracy Dadang and Kurt Laput as icing. The lead ballooned to 49-39 with a
minute left to defuse any hopes of an upset.
Dadang led SHS-Ateneo with 14 points as Laput, Reymark Narbasa and
Josiah Villamayor has nine apiece. Elizalde Abella led SMS-Boystown with a
game-high 22 points.
In Division 2
Finals games, UV-B stopped USC North-B, 43-25, in the Under 12 age group. But
Don Bosco Technical College denied UV another title by winning the Under 10 Fun
Division, 40-35.
