SAC Recognizes Cebu's Best

They’re the best of Cebu Sports and we, the Cebu sportswriters, have been following their careers all these years. They’ve carried the colors of Cebu Sports with great pride and the sportswriters have seen them in action, have written about them and have shared all their ups and downs with them.

 And so at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the Sportswriters Association of Cebu will do one more thing: recognize the best of the best from the year 2014 in a formal awarding/recognition ceremony at the Ayala Center Cebu Activity Area. For the 33rd time, the SAC and San Miguel Brewery Inc. get together again to cite the biggest performers of last year in what is called the SAC-SMB Awards Cebu Sports Awards. The Ayala Center Cebu also partners with us in this annual venture along with International Pharmaceuticals Inc. It isn’t too often when we get together with athletes in a recognition ceremony like this. We usually see them all the time at sports events and press conferences, but rarely see them away from the court in a different kind of awarding ceremony. For the sportswriters of Cebu, it’s another opportunity to unite as one and recognize the same people who we cover. We’re not writing about them in a competitive way this time. Instead, we’re citing them as one group. For the athletes, it will also be a unique chance to meet other top athletes from different events who they rarely see at all since they’re all focused on each his or her own event/sport. They’ll get to find out that Cebu is indeed a breeding ground of great athletes, including those at the world class level. So who’ll be there?

 We’ll see athletes like world champion Donnie Nietes, PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo, and Greg Slaughter. We’ll also meet the “lesser known” athletes like Leonida Cambarijan and Evangelito Dale Ceniza of Wrestling. Here’s a glimpse of all our awardees (at random). Softball’s Isaac Bacarisas, Jasper Cabrera, Ben Maravilles, Oscar Bradshaw IV and Jerome Bacarisas. We also have Basketball’s June Mar Fajardo and Aldrich Ramos. Beach volleyball’s Edmar Bonono and Edward Ybañez. Boxing’s Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, Kim Steven Yap of Chess. Cycling’s Niño Surban and John Mier. Milo BEST: All Basics The Basketball Efficiency Scientific Training (BEST) Center has been around for 31 years, and it has been at the forefront of doing the most basic of basketball teaching: sticking to the basics. This is the primary content of the Milo-sponsored BEST Center basketball clinics that have become an institution in Philippine basketball. “We teach the fundamentals, lahat ng klaseng fundamentals ng basketball — that’s our philosophy, dahil sabi nila, basketball is just a series of fundamentals,” said Nic, who was inspired to bring the concept of basketball clinics to the Philippines 31 years ago when budding players at that time had no formal training in the sport. Dominate Visayas?

Bleacher Talk November 9, 2008 Dominate Visayas? Cebu has always boasted that it’s the hotbed of basketball south of Manila. But if it’s a real dominance over the rest of our neighbors in Visayas and Mindanao, this will have to cover all levels of basketball. At the higher level of basketball, Cebu is virtually unstoppable. The M. Lhuillier ballclub has always been tops in the semi pro circuit, representing Cebu in the Liga Plipinas and their previous leagues such as the MVBA and URBL. At the collegiate level, the University of the Visayas has always been tagged as the top collegiate team in the Vismin and is even considered a threat to the top teams of the UAAP and NCAA. We’re not counting the PBA and PBL here since these are more national in scope. But I’d like to see M. Lhuillier take their action to this level (this makes another story).
