Summer Sports (Again)

Summer will always be known as the time of the year for children to get into other things outside of their academic interests. And the most popular way to spend a productive summer is by attending summer sports clinics. This annual tradition dates back to way back in history when the rise of the so called summer leagues and clinics were held.

And this year isn’t any different. Cebu alone is already “loaded” with so many sports clinics covering different sporting events. The more popular clinics will always be for basketball. If you’re looking for where to send your son, most of the clinics started last week but it’s never too late to catch up especially for the clinics that will run through the whole month of April and even May. The most logical starting point on where to enroll your child will always be his/her school. All schools with basketball programs have summer clinics. The bigger schools would be the likes of Sacred Heart School/Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-Adc is its new name), the University of San Carlos North and South Campuses and Don Bosco. For other schools, the summer is just an extension of the regular practices that are being conducted for its teams. Walk-on students are welcome to join the regular players at practice as these also serve as the school’s try-outs for the teams that will be formed for competition during the regular schoolyear.

Then there are also the private summer clinics being organized by former commercial or collegiate players and other coaches as well. Among these are those of Sunsport, Time Out, Power Play and Friends (Talamban). The more popular players with their respective clinics include Ramon Fernandez and Al Solis. These are held in different gyms around the city. For those members of exclusive sports clubs, they also have their summer lessons for their members and even non-members.

And then you have the Milo BEST Basketball Clinic from May 17-22 at the Sacred Heart School Mango Campus Gym. Ompong Segura will be the lead coach of the clinic that has become an annual fixture in the national basketball scene for the past 32 years. Milo and the BEST Center have been partners for the past three decades in teaching the basics of basketball and also organizing an annual inter-school tournament for the youth (15 and 12 Under age groups). Milo also partners with other clinics and all these can be found in its website.

But it’s not all about basketball now, is it? Swimming clinics are traditionally well attended since the summer is a perfect time to go for a swim. Many parents want their kids to learn how to swim but the most time that they can devote for this is during the summer. So they’re off to the pools of the Cebu City Sports Complex (Abellana), the Sacred Heart Center, YMCA and the different exclusive sports clubs. Some schools also offer summer classes in their respective pools. And then there are football, badminton, volleyball, athletics (track and field), chess, tennis, table tennis, dancesport, tae kwon do, judo, eskrima, golf, mixed martial arts, and so much more. The Cebu City Sports Complex in Abellana has a whole lot of clinics in different events.

The summer will also be marked with summer tournaments in different events. Basketball leagues are always a common sight every summer, and so are those of tennis, football, swimming, running and triathlon.

But why get into sports? It’s a topic that has been discussed so many times yet people still tend to underestimate the value of sports. Getting our children into sports is one of the best ways to develop their over-all personality. It shouldn’t be all about books, studies and more studies. And then you also have the tendency to abuse the use of PSP, the trips to internet cafĂ©’s, the bumming around in malls and believe it or not, the partying that teen-agers do. We all know how these aren’t productive in developing a person. No discipline, no hard work, no training, no nothing. Is this what we want for our children?

It’s never too late to get started. Go bring your child to the nearest sports center and get him into sports. You’ll never go wrong.
