SHSJ Falls to La Salle

SHSJ Falls to La Salle

Iloilo City – In a twist of de ja vu, the Sacred Heart School Jesuit (SHSJ) Eagles bowed to a Manila team for the second straight year in the BEST Center SBP-Passerelle basketball tournament sponsored by Milo at the University of San Agustin Gym. SHSJ bowed to favorites La Sale Greenhills (LSGH), 72-105, in the Passerelle division championship game that illustrated the dominance of Manila over teams from the province.

A 32-0 blast bridging the end of the second quarter and the start of the third was all that La Salle needed, breaking wide open a game that was nip and tuck until the end of the of the second quarter. SHSJ’s first unit gave the Eagles a 23-21 lead at the end of the first quarter and its second unit matched the Archers until the 1:40 mark of the second periodr. With La Salle up by two, 45-43, Alexander Torres led the Archers in a 10-2 run to end the period on top 55-45. Torres was unstoppable in the second period, drilling in 19 points.

LSGH’s third quarter unit then crushed SHSJ’s hopes as they kicked off the second half with a 22-0 blast that put the game out of reach. The Eagles couldn’t solve La Salle’s crippling full court press for which all La Salle basketball teams are known. This resulted to an avalanche of easy baskets in transition. When the smoke had cleared, LSGH took a commanding 93-54 lead at the end of the third, breaking SHSJ’s hearts. SHSJ could manage only one field goal in the third period with all other points came from the free throw line. It was cruise control for La Salle in fourth period where they built as much as a 42-point lead at one point, never giving SHSJ a chance to make a comeback.

Torres led LSGH with 19 points and he was backed up by Andres Sta. Clara who added 17. Daryl Nazareno and Joseph Zozobrado had 11 points apiece to lead SHSJ.

The loss duplicated SHSJ’s loss to Ateneo de Manila last year in the SBP division of the tournament. Although it was a tough pill to swallow, SHSJ will head home with their heads up high, having placed second to the best team in the national finals after defeating the champion teams from Luzon and Mindanao. SHSJ ended the tournament with a respectable 14-1 cumulative win-loss record that started with the Cebu leg.

In the SBP division, Ateneo de Manila (ADMU) picked up its game just in time to bag its second straight championship with a 52-45 win over Ateneo de Davao. The Davaeños were in the driver’s seat through most of the match until ADMU recovered to tie the game at 40-all early in the fourth period. Nursing a slim 46-45 lead with two minutes left, ADMU ran off six straight points to end the game.
