Liquid Tile, Power Floor Score Sweeps

Liquid Tile/UAP Lapu-lapu and Power Floor/UAP Cebu-Sugbu went perfect and scored a sweep of their respective groups in the Davies Cup 2008 basketball tournament at the Metro Sports Center.

Liquid Tile/UAP Lapu-lapu leaned on the break-out game of Alan Choachuy to thwart Mortaflex 104-62, while Power Floor overcame Acreex, 63-50. In the other game, the slumping Sun & Rain/UAP Rajah Humabon scored is first win in three games by beating Megacryl, 60-53.

Choachuy broke into double digit scoring for the first time in the tournament, banging in 13 points, seven of which came in the third quarter where Liquid Tile broke away to put the game out of reach. Mark Capili led Liquid Tile with 15 points leading four others in double digit outputs.

Power Floor used a fourth quarter surge to outlast the fighting Acreex squad. Power Floor’s eight-point lead at the halftime was slashed to six at the end of the third quarter after Acreex’ repeated rallies. The architects from the Cebu and Sugbu chapters however, limited their opponents to only 13 points in the final period while scoring 20 of their own to ice the win.

Antonio Decatoria, Cris Matunog and Lord Ong combined for 40 points to lead Power Floor while Taña led Acreex anew with 15.

Liquid Tile and Power Floor, the top two teams among the different local chapters of the United Architects of the Philippines, now sit on top of their respective groups with 4-0 records and have grabbed the top ranking going into final elimination round games this weekend where both teams will be idle.

Focus has now switched to the battle for the second semifinals slots of both groups. Polyflor has the upper hand in Group A but a loss to Megacryl combined with a win by Sun and Rain over Mortaflex will result into a three-way tie for second place. The same is true in Group B. If Roof Shield yields to Da Vinci and Acreex defeats Classitex, a three-way tie will also be established for second place. The winner-over-the-other rule and Olympic quotient (if necessary) will be used to break all ties.

The Group A standings see Liquid Tile on top with a 4-0 slate, followed by Polyflor (2-1), Sun & Rain (1-2), Megacryl (1-2), and Mortaflex (0-3). In Group B, Power Floor is tops at 4-0. Behind them are Roof Shield (2-1), Acreex (1-2), Da Vinci (1-2) and Classitex (0-3).

The Davies Cup 2008 is a basketball tournament organized by Davies Paints for professionals in the field of painting. Seeing action are three teams from the United Architects of the Philippines, five teams of contractors and two teams from the civil engineers group.
