UC, USC North Score Sweeps in CYBL
The University of Cebu (UC) and University of San Carlos North Campus ( USC NC ) scored close wins over upset-conscious foes to sweep their respective divisions at the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) – Hapee Cup over the weekend.
UC scored a close 79-75 win over USC South Campus ( USC SC ) in double overtime to take solo leadership of the Midget division. USC SC was on its way to scoring a big upset over the pre-tournament favorites as they led UC throughout the game. And with the game tied at 59-all and six seconds left, USC SC broke down the full-court trap of UC perfectly, but Daryl Nazareno missed from point blank as time expired. The first overtime was a repeat of the last five minutes of regulation as both teams traded baskets and lead changes. With UC down 67-68, UC’s Gerald Ampoon had a chance to lead UC to a win, but could only split his charities to tie the game anew and send it into a second overtime. The second overtime was an all-UC show as they streaked with 10-3 run that broke the backs of USC South Baby Warriors.
In the Mini division, USC NC nipped Don Bosco, 35-32 to sweep the division and arrange a championship showdown with rival Sacred Heart School Jesuit (SHSJ). USC NC started out hot to take a 14-9 first quarter lead, but Don Bosco retaliated by holding USC North to only a basket in the second period to take a 19-16 halftime lead. USC then countered with a crippling full-court trap to limit Don Bosco to single point to tie the game at 20-all at the end of the third. Rey Arnejo and John Pajantoy then took over in the fourth, combining for nine points to score the win.
In other Midget division games, USC North defeated USPF, 64-48. SHSJ scored it first win over Springdale , 64-29, but fell to Don Bosco a day later, 57-65. USC South recovered from the UC loss with a 57-43 humping of USPF as UC pounced on Springdale 88-32.
UC will now face USC South in the championship game of the Midget division while USC NC will go up against SHSJ in the Mini division. These games will be played at the City Sports Club Cebu on March 2.
Team standings have UC on top with a 6-0 slate in the Midget division. They are followed by USC SC (5-1), USC NC (3-2), USPF (2-3), Don Bosco (2-3), SHSJ (1-4) and Springdale (0-6). The final elimination round standings in the Mini division sees USC NC at 4-0, SHS (3-1), Don Bosco (2-2), USPF (1-3) and Springdale (0-4).
The CYBL-Hapee Cup is the kick-off tournament of the CYBL which seeks to provide a venue for basketball activities for the youth. The Midget division is for boys born 1992-1994, while the Mini division is for boys born 1995-1997. The opening salvo is also supported by Crunchicken.
