Sacred Heart Wins RIFA Cup

The Sacred Heart School Jesuit (SHSJ) Boys 97 football team defeated Colegio de San Agustin (CSA), 3-1, in a penalty shoot-out to win the Rizal Football Association’s RIFA Cup 2008 at the CSA football field in Makati over the weekend.

The game ended in a 1-all tie at the end of regulation period, and SHSJ needed to rely on their penalty kicks for the second straight year to defend their crown. CSA scored first in the first half of regulation, but the Eagles retaliated through JM Acebedo-Kwan’s penalty kick after Kiko Villamor was fouled by a CSA defender in the penalty area late in the game. Acebedo-Kwan’s goal not only found the back of the net, but more importantly lifted the spirits of the Eagles, enabling them to gain back the momentum they had lost after finding themselves down 0-1, going into the end-game.

Acebedo-Kwan, Jerby Bernaldez and tournament MVP Villamor made sure that there wouldn’t be any doubt to the outcome as they nailed their respective kicks from the spot. Bernaldez duplicated his role of last year as he blocked two CSA penalty kicks after scoring his own goal, just as he did in 2007 when SHSJ defeated Southridge also via penalty shoot-out.

SHSJ finished the tournament undefeated, sweeping the opposition in the elimination round where they crushed HEDCEN 4-0, Ateneo de Manila 1-0, Southridge 4-1 and CSA 3-0. They then defeated Xavier, 3-0, in the semifinals before facing CSA again in the finals.

The SHSJ Boys 97 team is composed of Acebedo-Kwan, Bernaldez, Villamor, Jun Carlo Canlas, Mark Veloso, Matoy Reyes, Emman Villaver, Thirdy Pepito, Bertram Musni, Martin Tudtud, Isagani Fernandez and Kyle Silawan. They are coached by the tandem of Lito Ramos and Martin Dilgencia. The delegation was led by SHSJ Athletic Director Fr. Julian Hernando S.J. and lead parent coordinator Tonet Pelicano.

SHSJ’s Boys 96 team, which was reinforced by some players from the Boys 97 team, improved their third place finish of last year by placing second to another Cebu-based team in PAREF Springdale, losing 0-1 in the finals. The Eagles finished their elimination round with a 3-1-1 win-loss-draw record to snatch the second seed behind PAREF Springdale in their group play.

But the highlight of their day had to be defeating defending champion and RIFA Cup powerhouse HEDCEN, 2-0, via penalty shoot-out in the semifinals. HEDCEN is one of the most dominant teams in the Boys 96 division, having won all RIFA tournaments and RIFA Cups in which they’ve played in the past three years. It was payback time as the Eagles were humbled by HEDCEN, 0-3 at last year’s RIFA Cup.
