Basketball Heats Up the Summer

Bleacher Talk April 26, 2015 Basketball Heats Up the Summer It has been on hot summer for basketball, hasn’t it? It’s gotten so hot that just about everything has taken place. Is it the heat? Is it the sport? What gives? The heat starts in the U.S. with the NBA playoffs that has been really hot! Did you see those treys of Steph Curry against the Pelicans? Did you see Tim Duncan playing as if he didn’t turn 39 years old today, and how the NBA’s defensive player of the year Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high yesterday? And how about the Cavs duo of Kyrie Irving and Lebron James? And the double OT win of the Bulls over the Bucks? Derrick Rose says he’s more mature as a player, and that means bad news for opponents; then you have Jimmy Butler erupting for Chicago, too. The Hawks have been just that: the typical Hawks that goes deep into its line-up to get the job done. No superstars? No problem. James Harden is pleading his case as MVP up against the tide leaning towards Cur
Bleacher Talk May 10, 2015 Palaro 2015 The Palarong Pambansa 2015 will go down as one of Bleacher Talk’s favorites as one of the better ones from a hosting point of view. Sure, there will be the usual questions of officiating, biases and criticism over the way the DEPED manages the games, but I prefer to stay out of that for now. I just feel that it’s proper to commend the province of Davao del Norte, the city of Tagum and all those involved for being gracious hosts of these games. Tagum is an ideal venue for a Palarong Pambansa primarily due to its infrastructure and united way of hosting. Travelling to Tagum even by public transportation is smooth, hassle-free and a treat to the eyes. We’re talking about four to six-lane highways assuring a smooth ride to and from Tagum whether you’re coming from the Davao City area or from the north/CARAGA region. And that’s hundreds of kilometers we’re talking about. Fellow sportswriter Noel Villalfor, who’s here to watch his daughte

SAC Recognizes Cebu's Best They’re the best of Cebu Sports and we, the Cebu sportswriters, have been following their careers all these years. They’ve carried the colors of Cebu Sports with great pride and the sportswriters have seen them in action, have written about them and have shared all their ups and downs with them.  And so at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the Sportswriters Association of Cebu will do one more thing: recognize the best of the best from the year 2014 in a formal awarding/recognition ceremony at the Ayala Center Cebu Activity Area. For the 33rd time, the SAC and San Miguel Brewery Inc. get together again to cite the biggest performers of last year in what is called the SAC-SMB Awards Cebu Sports Awards. The Ayala Center Cebu also partners with us in this annual venture along with International Pharmaceuticals Inc. It isn’t too often when we get together with athletes in a recognition ceremony like this. We usually see them all the time at sports events and press
Donnie & Donaire’s D-Day For a 30th edition, Pinoy Pride made another trip to Manila, this time going back to the historical Araneta Coliseum for “D-Day,” featuring WBO light flyweight world champion Donnie “Ahas” Neites and former four-division world champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire. I’ve always been puzzled with Manila boxing fans due to their lack of interest in watching Pinoy boxing live unless the main event featured someone named Manny Pacquiao. When we asked ALA Promotions big boss Michael Aldeguer about it, he gamely said that winning the following of Manila fans is a work in progress, but they’re being patient and are also confident that they’ll draw the big crowds pretty soon.  Fast forward to last Saturday; for the first time for a Manila boxing event, I was impressed with the turnout of boxing fans who trooped to the Big Dome to watch Pinoy Pride 30. It was easily the biggest crowd that had watched a Pinoy Pride event in Manila by far and the biggest crowd
