SHS-Ateneo Trips Don Bosco in OT

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu squeezed out a come-from-behind 40-37 overtime win over Don Bosco Technical College Cebu in the semifinals of the SBP division of the SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Sacred Heart School Mango Avenue campus gym yesterday. Down 7-13 and 15-25 after the first two periods, the Magis Eagles slowly but surely clawed their way back into the game in the second half. They narrowed the lead down to three, 25-28, at the end of the third period behind the six third period points of Kyean Gubat. They sustained their momentum in the fourth period with Keenan Rasmo drilling two successive triples to give SHS-Ateneo its first taste of the lead at 35-31. But Don Bosco battled back to tie the game on a triple and a free throw by AJ Prudenciado to send the game into overtime with 52 seconds left in the game. Neither side scored from that point. UV Undefeated in SBP Passerelle Games

The University of the Visayas swept the field to claim the top seeded spot going into the playoffs of the SBP division of the BEST SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo. The SBP Lancers defeated Don Bosco Technology Center Cebu, 67-40, for its third straight win at the Sacred Heart School Mango Avenue campus gym. UV led from start to finish opening up leads of 9-2 and 20-10 after the first two periods. They then raced to a 31-16 lead at the end of the third period to settle the outcome. John Carl Baring led UV with 13 points as Josef Calo-oy had seven for Don Bosco.In the other SBP game, SHS-Ateneo de Cebu trounced St.  Benedict Child Education Centre, 72-24. In the Passerelle division, UV scored its second straight win, 67-40, over Southwestern University-PHINMA. These were the main messages at yesterday’s forum for parents in sports e ntitled “Parents in Sports: One Big Fight (Chill lang diha).” This was held at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu campus in Mandaue for parents of student-athletes of the sports program of the school. A first of its kind in Cebu and organized by the school’s Parents-Teachers Association, the forum was held with the goal of taking a second look at the role of parents in sports. Guest speakers from Ateneo de Davao (ADDU) were invited. Joy “Tita Joy” Diamante, a mother of three boys and one girl who all play or played for football for ADDU, were part of the national youth football teams of their age groups, and who were honor students, spoke about her experience as a sports parent to all four. UV Starts Big in SBP Passerelle Tournament

The University of the Visayas SBP and Passerelle teams are out to make a statement scoring convincing wins on opening day of the SBP Passerelle Twin tournament backed by Milo at the Sacred Heart School Mango Avenue campus gym. The UV SBP team outscored Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 44-28, while the UV Passerelle Lancers dropped the bomb on Sisters of Mary School-Boystown, 66-19. UV started out slowly against the Magis Eagles SBP side, taking an 11-7 lead at the end of the first period. Neil John Bernante then scored 11 points in a second period charge that gave UV a commanding lead at 28-11 at halftime, a gap that wouldn’t be threatened for the rest of the game. Bernanted led UV with 13 points while John Louie Bual added 12. Kyean Gubat led SHS-Ateneo with 7. In the Passerelle division, UV led from start to finish, limiting SMS-Boystown to only four points in the first half to get its season going on a high note. SMS Earns Trip to Bali in IBF Youth Leaders Cup 3X3

The Sisters of Mary School-Boystown and Girlstown are not only known for being the 3X3 capital of the south. They’re also producing 3X3 champion teams. They proved this after snaring the top two places of the International Basketball Foundation Youth Leaders Cup U18 3X3 basketball tournament held at SMS-Girlstown Sunday. SMS 1 outscored SMS 9, 22-15, in the finals to earn the right to represent the country at the IBF Youth Leaders Cup 3X3 Finals in Bali, Indonesia in September. C-Jay Gonzales scorched the net with 17 points, including the game-winning two-point basket that ended the game before time was consumed. He made a total of eight two-point baskets in the game, firing from different spots on the floor to ignite the hometown crowd that cheered for the two sister teams. Ryan Dizo added four. IBF Youth Leaders Cup 3X3 Today

A trip to Bali, Indonesia waits the winner of the IBF Youth Leaders Cup 3X3 Basketball Tournament that fired off today, July 28, at the Sisters of Mary School Girlstown in Talisay. This unique 3X3 tournament features teams composed of two boys and two girls per team in the Under 18 age group. Seeing action are Cebu’s top teams along with teams from Davao, Guimaras, Tagbilaran, and Tacloban. The champion earns the right to represent the Philippines to the IBF Youth Leaders Cup 3X3 tournament and workshop in Bali, Indonesia in September. Special guest for the event is Amanda Alejandrino, the country’s first representative to the IBF Youth Leaders Workshop in 2018. Cebu’s Aaron CaƱete is this year’s representative to the workshop and thus serves as host for this year’s Philippine edition.
